What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to schools to help improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged pupils.

At Penistone St John the Baptist CE Primary School, we recognise that disadvantaged pupils are not a homogenous group. Barriers to learning vary between individuals and may include SEND, language and communication needs, attendance, social and emotional factors, sense of belonging, or wider family circumstances.

Our approach is based on identifying and addressing individual barriers to learning so that every pupil can achieve well, access an ambitious curriculum and flourish both academically and personally.

Why Register?

We encourage all eligible families to register.

Registering helps ensure that:

• Your child receives any support and entitlement available to them.
• The school receives additional funding where applicable.
• We can provide support as early as possible.
• We can continue to invest in teaching, intervention, attendance support, wellbeing provision and enrichment opportunities

Even if your child chooses not to take a school meal, it is important to register if you believe you may be eligible.

Our Pupil Premium Strategy

Our strategy is rooted in a clear understanding of the strengths, needs and barriers experienced by our disadvantaged pupils.

We prioritise:

• High-quality teaching for all pupils.
• Early identification of barriers to learning.
• Evidence-informed teaching and intervention approaches.
• Effective support for attendance, wellbeing and engagement.
• Access to enrichment opportunities and wider experiences.
• Continuous evaluation to ensure funding has the greatest possible impact.

We review the impact of our strategy regularly and adapt our provision when necessary to ensure disadvantaged pupils receive the support they need to thrive.

Our Current Priorities

Reading

Developing language, reading fluency and comprehension so that disadvantaged pupils can successfully access the wider curriculum.

Writing

Improving vocabulary, transcription, sentence construction and composition to improve attainment and reduce gaps.

Supporting Pupils Experiencing Additional Barriers

Providing carefully targeted support for pupils experiencing multiple barriers to learning, including those who are disadvantaged and have SEND.

Attendance and Engagement

Improving attendance and reducing persistent absence so that pupils can benefit fully from their education.

Belonging and Participation

Ensuring disadvantaged pupils feel connected to school life and can fully participate in enrichment opportunities, clubs and wider experiences.
