"Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong."

John F. Kennedy

The Physical Education curriculum is carefully designed, in line with our vision of children becoming their best versions. St John’s Primary School recognise the value of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) and we fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for Physical Education to ensure that all children:

· develop the skills, knowledge and competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and sports

· are physically active for sustained periods of time

· are provided with opportunities engage in competitive sports and practical activities

· are enabled to lead a healthy and active lifestyle

Through the use of GetSet4PE, Physical Education is taught at St John’s as an area of learning in its own right and children receive two hours of high quality Physical Education teaching per week. This allows them to broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding in a wide range of sports and physical activities. In addition to this, designated external teaching spaces and resources are provided so that active and outdoor learning can take place regularly within other areas of the curriculum. Throughout the school day, children take part in a ‘daily mile’ initiative - this is supported by a reward scheme and we have a trim trail, outdoor gym facilities, a multi-use games area and numerous playground markings so that children have many opportunities to take part in active breaks and lunchtimes.

We teach PE lessons so that children:

· enjoy their PE lessons and experience success in sporting situations

· have consistent opportunities to participate in PE lessons and progress at their own pace

· are secure in their knowledge and can develop a range of skills

· develop and demonstrate an excellent sporting attitude

· understand and can apply the basic rules of all activities taught

· experience positive competitive opportunities

· learn in a safe environment with an element of managed risk

· possess a foundation for lifelong physical activity

· are ready for their next stage in learning
